Weather Balloon Launch
Sharon Elementary Launches
Weather Balloon
On Monday May 19th, 2014 Sharon Elementary School launched a high altitude balloon (SES Balloon 1). The balloon reached an altitude of 80,000 feet and traveled 110 miles away! It landed in a remote area just Southeast of Lake Sinclair near Sparta, Georgia (near Milledgeville). Launch time was 9:18a.m and the balloon landed at 11:53a.m. The flight lasted almost an hour longer and traveled much farther than predicted!
The balloon carried a payload which is a styrofoam cooler equipped with a video camera to record the flight, a USB weather data logger to record the temperature, humidity, and air pressure at 5 minute intervals, and a GPS tracker which allowed us to recover the payload. Even though our camera froze we were still able to capture an amazing video and pictures.
